The Little Team That Could: FRP Schedule Change

The original FRP schedule for the F1600 and F2000 Championship Series has been reinstated with the first event taking place at Road Atlanta on April 21-22. That opens up the SCCA Runoffs as an event that Rice Race Prep can now service. RRP provides unparalleled value offering three programs for F1600 Arrive-N-Drive customers. FRP F1600 Series, or SCCA  Runoffs, or just individual events, such as the Montreal GP are all options, and can be combined for committed drivers who want to maximize their F1600 experience. RRP drivers do not have to worry about being part of a large operation running a multiple of drivers in a multiple of Series on the same weekend, often at different tracks. Our focus is on giving our drivers #1 status. The size of our operation is our strength, not our liability. With some team sponsorship, and our lean efficient operation, we can provide more value than our competition. We believe that FRP events also provide that same value, and RRP @FRP is a winning combination. RRP won the 2016 F2000 Championship Series in dominant fashion. We are looking for a driver who wants to do the same in F1600 in 2018.

RRP Offers SVRA Race Support

Rice Race Prep is committed to Formula Racing Promotions events. We do continue to explore other secondary racing events in an effort to reduce any dependence on SCCA. We can provide service to Pro F1600 events in Ontario and Quebec, visiting tracks like Mosport, Montreal, and Trois-Rivieres. Another option for our customers is SVRA, which visits some absolutely spectacular tracks. The downside is that they do not welcome Honda-powered F1600 cars, so we would need to take a kent-powered Formula Ford or other approved Formula or SportsRacing car. Their schedule aligns well with FRP. RRR Feb 16-18, Sebring March 1-4, R Atlanta March 28-31, R America May 17-20, Indy June 13-17, Mid-Ohio June 21-24, Glen Sept 6-9, VIR Sept 20-23, NC Oct 5-7, COTA Nov 1-4. SVRA runs 3 groups of FF within Group 2. 1. Formula Ford thru 1972 (1600cc)(2/CF). 2. Club Ford 1973-1981 (1600cc)(2/PCF). 3. Post Club Ford 1982-2008 (1600cc) No Honda engines. RiceRacePrep can also provide full support for customers with cars who want to race SVRA.

Introduction and Invitation: Greg Rice and Rice Race Prep

Greg Rice

I have been involved in motorsports for almost 40 years after I started ice racing as a teenager in Canada. I won two Canadian Formula Vee championships. I raced in the first Pro F2000 Championship in  North America in 1984, and began working on other racer's cars shortly thereafter. I brought my customer, Steve Bamford, to the very first FRP F1600 Championship at VIR in 2011. By 2013, RiceRacePrep were regulars with FRP, and I have only missed one event since then, by doctors orders during cancer treatment. I won the Series Engineer-of-the-Year in 2013. Steve won several F1600 Series events and 10 F2000 Series events from 2014 to 2016. Certainly, our glory year was 2016, when Steve won 8 races on his way to the F2000 championship. I also helped Steve with his F4 efforts in 2016 and 2017. Steve moved on, and I worked with different drivers recently, including Joel Haas, Cliff Johnson, Rick Payne, and Simon Sikes. In September of 2017, I purchased 2 more Mygale F1600 cars, both previous winning cars in the F1600 Series. That gives RRP three F1600 Mygales and one F2000 Citation available for use by driver's looking to race our professionally prepared race cars. There are 3 different race Series that we can support. Formula Race Promotions (FRP) runs  7-race Series for both F1600 and F2000 cars that are very competitive. The FRP F1600 Series is one of the most competitive FF series in the world, in what as regarded as the best training class for formula cars in the world. We also support selected SCCA events and pro events in Canada (Montreal GP and GP Trois-Rivieres). We can combine selected events with the complete FRP Series events, or pick selected events that can combine with other Series that drivers may already be racing in. We have some team sponsorship that allows us offer excellent pricing. I invite anyone interested in knowing more about racing F1600 or F2000 with RRP to check out the Rice Race Prep website, and contact me with any questions or comments. Thank You, Greg Rice

Spring Training for FRP Season

FRP announced on Jan 23rd that their schedule is rearranged and the season opener at Road Atlanta has become the season finale in October. The good news is that it is a better track to decide the title. The bad news is that we will have to wait another 4 weeks to get the F1600 Series started. We have put together a "Spring Training" package to prepare our team for the FRP F1600 season. We will attend both the Road Atlanta Majors event and VIR Super Tour event. We will also do the pre-event test days at both events, and schedule other testing just before Road Atlanta. This will fully prepare us for the season while keeping us within our target seasonal budget of "less than 6 figures". If the interest is there, we can also schedule some introductory testing for potential racers during the week of March 16th.

Revised Scheduling for RiceRacePrep

Due to some recent instability with SCCA management, we are shifting the focus of our secondary events to showcase events in the Northeast and Canada. Formula Racing Promotion (FRP) events will continue to be our focus, but we are adding "destination" events at Mosport, Montreal GP (June 8-10), Trois-Riviere (Aug 10-12), and Mont Tremblant. We will maintain our usual attendance at Watkins Glen (June 22-24). We hope we can add some quality drivers who are competing in other Series but would like a chance for spot-duty at these fine tracks. Rice Race Prep is open for new business in 2018. 2017 was a transitional year as we diversified and worked with new teams and drivers, but we would really like to get back to our specialty. We will have up to 3 "arrive n drive" seats available for FRP F1600 and one in F2000. We have the capability to service full-time FRP customers in F1600 or F2000 who have their own cars. We have a legacy of data, video, and expertise, so that we can provide a complete and focused race effort to racers that want to go racing seriously. Although it seems like long ago, please recall that RRP did win the 2016 F2000 Masters and Overall Championships in dominant fashion. We are always open to interesting consulting  projects. Please inquire to see how we can best help you upgrade your program. Look for a FRP F1600 driver announcement in the next few weeks

Sebring FF Pictures

Sorry that I am missing the Pipers of Bob Perona and Charles Foster who missed this session. Note the extra side protection on the yellow car that is the target of persecution by some political types in SCCA. That extended side protection has been termed a "performance advantage" and is being handicapped with a weight penalty. Really!!!!! This is the pod bottom. Not the top but the bottom. No venturis. No ground effects. Just 4" per side more frontal area, weight, etc. Really!!!!!

Back in the Saddle …. Bamford at Sebring

Steve Bamford returned to the cockpits of his RiceRacePrep prepared cars at Sebring International Raceway on the January 12-14th. He qualified his Citation FC in 3rd position, finishing 3rd in race 1, and 2nd in the Sunday feature. He also set fast lap on Sunday on his Hoosier radial tires. He qualified his black #07 Mygale Honda 4th in FF. Struggling for front grip, he ended up 8th in Saturday's race. In a thrilling, eventful Sunday race, he ended up on the runner-up step of the podium. The races were dominated by FRP F1600 teams, suggesting we're in store for a spectacular FRP season. Last call for drivers looking to drive an RRP car at the COTA or Sebring events in February. We're approaching last call for fly-in consulting services at either event. We expect to announce plans for the 2018 FRP season in the next few weeks. Arrive-N-drive or trackside service packages are still available.

2017 Season Review RiceRacePrep

Long season! 120 days on the road for 80 days at the track for 22 events. Many different drivers, all bringing their passion and personality, joined us for events in 2017.  Joel Haas wins FB at Homestead. Cliff Johnson 3rd overall and Masters winner at FRP Mid-Ohio-1. Chris Smith raced with us at FRP Indy. We worked with Cape Motorsports to run Steve Bamford in F4. Steve's Cape teammate Kyle Kirkwood won the F4 Championship. USA TeamUSA Scholarship driver Jonathan Kotyk joined us at Thompson for a SCCA event and brought home a 2nd place result. Jonathan had a great year finishing 2nd in the FRP Series and SCCA Runoffs. Joel Haas won his first FRP Masters race at PIRC. The high of the season after being taken out by another competitor when about to win the day before. RiceRacePrep pulled an all-nighter to fix the car and change the engine to make it all possible.  Rick Payne joined us at PIRC for a Masters runnerup finish. Joel Haas had strong wins at FRP Summit Point. The boss drove the Reynard at 5 events but failed to make a podium with a string of 4th results. Another season highlight for Joel Haas was the SCCA Runoffs. In a huge field, surrounded by former Champions, Joel qualified well, and was running in the top-8 before ending up in the wall. Simon Sikes joined the team for his first F1600 race at FRP NJMP and was outstanding with a pair of 4ths against tough seasoned competition. Thank you to all the drivers and crew who made 2017 such an outstanding season. Bring on 2018!

RRP Schedule Updates

There are two updates to the RRP schedule as recently posted. FRP has added a 7th event to their schedule at NJMP in New Jersey. It will be the season Finale on September 16-18 with TransAm and the SCCA Pro formula classes. We also think the Southern FF Series race at Sebring on February 10-11 will be an excellent event for FRP F1600 racers to prepare for their upcoming season, so RRP can provide full service for that Florida event. As 2017 winds down, we look to put together the best combination of events for the best customer experience in 2018. This can involve "fly-in" consulting services or full raceprep service for FRP F1600 & F2000, but also F3, F4, and other F1600 events in the Southern, SCCA, Ontario, and  Quebec Series. The RRP Mygales are ready for action! Please inquire.
